A Father Learns A Lesson from His Son
A father learns from his son’s father” is a story that defines itself. This story is made up of three characters from the same family and same gender. Velan was a carpenter. He lived in a village. His mother has passed away long ago. His aged father, Kuppan, lived with Velan. Kuppan was very weak. He could not even walk properly. How weak was he? This was because Velan did not give him enough food. He gave a small clay plate to his father. Even a small amount of rice in the plate became more visible. Velan was a bad person. He was also an alcoholic. After drinking alcohol, he abused his father badly.
Velan had a son. His name is Muthu. Muthu was only ten years old. He was a very nice boy. He loved his grandfather. He had great respect for his grandfather. He did not like his father’s attitude and character, as his father was cruel to his grandfather.
One day Kuppan was eating food in an earthen plate given by his son. The earthen plate fell. The plate broke into pieces. The food also fell on the ground. Velan was working at the other end of the room. He saw the broken plate. He was very angry with his father and used very harsh words to abuse his father. The old man felt bad about what happened. He regretted his mistake. Velan’s words hurt her deeply.
Velan’s son Muthu saw this. He didn’t like his father. His father used to ill-treat his grandfather. Afraid to speak against the father. He was sad for his grandfather. But he was not strong enough to stand up for his grandfather.
The next day Muthu took some carpenter’s tools and a piece of wood from his father. He used tools to make wooden plates. His father had seen him working.
“What are you making Muthu?” He asked.
“I’m making wooden plates!” Muthu replied.
“wooden plate! Why?” his father asked.
“I’m making this for you, father. When you grow old, you’ll need a plate to eat from, like my grandfather. A plate made of a clay mat breaks very easily. Then I can reprimand you I am. Therefore, I want to give you a wooden plate. It cannot be broken so easily.”

The carpenter was shocked to hear this. Now he realized his mistake. His father was kind to Velan. He had taken very good care of Velan. Now, that was old. Velan was taking serious treatment of his father. Velan was now very unhappy with his behaviour. He realized his mistakes. After that he became a different person.
From that day Velan respected his father a lot. He also stopped drinking. Velan learned a lesson from his own son.
